iPad 3 launch on 7th march

New York:  Apple is inviting reporters to an event next Wednesday in San Francisco. An image on the invite showing part of an iPad screen suggests it's to announce a new model.

The company has been widely expected to reveal the third version of the iPad soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.

The invitation is for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.

Apple didn't provide any details on the new device. Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster cellular broadband options.

It's not known when such a new device would be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

Mobile World Congress: Nokia unveils cheaper Windows smartphone

BARCELONA: Nokia unveiled a new, cheaper smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone software on Monday, in an attempt to reverse its declining market share.

Nokia last year dumped its own smartphone software in favour of Microsoft's Windows Phone to step up its fight against rivals such as Apple's iPhone, but the move has so far had limited impact due to the high prices of phones using it.

Nokia said its new Lumia 610 model would carry a price tag of 189 euros ($250), excluding subsidies and taxes, when it goes on sale next quarter.

"The 610 takes Nokia's Lumia portfolio to an encouraging new price point in its pursuit of cheaper Android rivals," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

Investors appeared sceptical that the new model and pricing would do the trick, pulling Nokia shares down 5 percent to 4.10 euros.

"I had hoped for a slightly lower price range. Maybe the markets were a bit disappointed with the price, which was quite high," Inderes analyst Mikael Rautanen said, though he noted the shares had spiked on Friday in anticipation of the event.

Nokia also announced a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

It also unveiled a new top-of-the range cameraphone 808, which comes with a 41 megapixel camera sensor, and three more basic models.

Microsoft's share of the smartphone market fell to just 2 percent last quarter, from 3 percent a year ago and 13 percent four years earlier, according to Strategy Analytics.

Android Dominates Day 1: Mobile World Congress

Android Dominates Day 1: Mobile World

Mobile World Congress got off to a roaring start with Android smartphones dominating day one of the mobile industry's red carpet event in Barcelona.
As Mobile World Congress kicked off on Monday, HTC, Huawei, Samsung, and Sony Mobile announced more than a half dozen new superphones. Some of the buzz words filling the day's events included Android 4.0, LTE, 4G, and quad-core. Here's a look at seven attention-worthy Android phones unveiled.
HTC One X: This is a killer phone. The One X features the Tegra 3 quad-core processor. It has four 1.5GHz main cores and a secondary core for low-power tasks. It boasts a 4.7-inch Super LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixels for full HD resolution. The 8-megapixel camera is aided by an ImageChip to help process images faster. This phone can take pictures once every 0.7 seconds. It comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0 from HTC. It's all encased in a creamy, polycarbonate shell that's tough-as-nails and not too hard on the eyes, either. HTC has integrated its Beats Audio software across all audio applications, so even Slacker and Pandora can take advantage of the One X's advanced sound-processing software. This phone will land in the U.S. in April with support for AT&T's LTE 4G network, but loses the Tegra 3 and substitutes a SnapDragon S4 processor instead.
HTC One S: This is also a killer phone, but not quite so killer as the One X. The display drops down to 4.3 inches and qHD (960 x 540) resolution, it has a dual-core SnapDragon S4 processor, and substitutes plasma-coated aluminum for the One X's polycarbonate shell. It has the same camera and same software as the One X. The good news is that the One S will debut on T-Mobile's network in the coming months with support for 42Mbps HSPA+.

HTC One V: The One V is a middle-of-the-road smartphone from HTC that still offers good looks and solid features at an affordable price point. The phone has a 3.7-inch display with 800 x 480 pixels, a 5-megapixel camera, a 1GHz S2 SnapDragon processor, and Android 4.0.
Huawei Ascend D Quad: This phone has one of the worst names ever given to an Android 4.0 device, but that's not stopping Huawei from crowing about its custom-built, quad-core engine. Huawei claims that the Ascend D Quad is the fastest smartphone ever built. The company is using its own processor --rather than one from Nvidia or Qualcomm. Other features include a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 HD display, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture, and a 1.3-megapixel user-facing camera for those video chats. Huawei plans to introduce several variants of this phone in a number of markets during the second quarter.
Samsung Galaxy Beam: This one-off Android device is a new take on the projector phone. It includes a pico projector capable of shining a 50-inch, 720p picture on any flat surface. Samsung says the Beam has a 15-Lumen lamp, which is fairly bright considering the small size. Other features of the Beam include a 4.0-inch, 480 x 800 display; 1GHz dual-core processor; 5-megapixel main camera with autofocus, flash, and video capture, as well as 1.3-megapixel user-facing camera. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE and HSPA 14Mbps cellular support, Bluetooth 3.0, and Wi-Fi. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Samsung didn't say if it will be updated to Android 4.0.
Sony Xperia P: Sony added two phones to its Xperia NXT line, and the P is the first of them. It's not as amazing as the Xperia S, announced at CES earlier this year, but carries the family genes downstream a bit in a more affordable package. It has a 4.0-inch Reality Display with Sony's BRAVIA Engine and WhiteMagic, a new display technology for an ultra-bright and power efficient viewing experience. It also has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, 8-megapixel camera with HD video recording, and NFC (near field Communications). Unfortunately, it ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and owners will need to wait until later in the second quarter for Android 4.0 to arrive.
Sony Xperia U: The Xperia U is aimed more at the entry-level range and has the specs to back that up. It has a 3.5-inch Reality Display with BRAVIA Engine, 1GHz dual-core processor, and 5-megapixel camera HD video recording. It also has "xLoud" stereo sound. The Xperia U has the same Android 2.3 OS out of the box as the Xperia P, and will see Android 4.0 later in the year.
Completely absent? Smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Shame, that.

Samsung projector phone

Samsung Galaxy Beam

Samsung, expected to make a quiet showing at this year's Mobile World Congress due to the fact that it doesn't have a press conference scheduled today or tomorrow, is actually projecting to offer a bit more buzz than the Ace 2 or Mini 2. How? With a projector phone, of course! Sammy's latest phone announced for the show is the Galaxy Beam, a refreshed version of the projector phone, with a bit fancier specs. The device is packing a 4-inch WVGA display, dual-core ST-Ericsson U8500 Cortex A9 CPU, 768MB of RAM and a 2,000mAh battery. Of course, those aren't the important specs to consider here -- the projector is. Taking advantage of a nHD (640 x 360) resolution and 15 Lumen brightness, the 12.5mm thickness helps Samsung claim the title of "world's thinnest projector phone."

All in all, the phone felt very comfortable to hold, and the lump that incorporates the projector isn't an eyesore in the slightest -- in fact, Samsung managed to add it in a rather stylish manner. Our only concern? The projector itself is found on the very top of the device without any recession, which will likely make it a candidate for being a fingerprint magnet. We also liked the dedicated power button for the projector on the top right of the phone, just above the normal phone switch.

We're also expecting to see some docks become available for the phone (which itself should be available in select markets in Q2) that will help stabilize it and keep it from shaking, as well as amplify sound for watching movies or video presentations.

ZTE Mimosa X ICS 4.0

ZTE Mimosa X official: ICS, Tegra 2, HSPA+ and 4.3-inch qHD display, arriving

And then there were three. Not 24 hours after announcing a pair of Android 4.0 handsets, ZTE is back with the Mimosa X, a 4.3-inch, HSPA+ device running Ice Cream Sandwich. Interestingly, this is the first time since NVIDIA acquired wireless chip maker Icera that we've seen a phone packing both Tegra 2 and an NVIDIA-made modem (in this case, the 21Mbps-capable Icera 450). In its press release, NVIDIA also goes so far as to say this is the first time "a premium mobile computing experience is coming to the mainstream smartphone market," as if Tegra 3 hadn't already pushed Tegra 2 down into mid-range territory. Anyhow, marketing spin aside, this is indeed a middle-of-the-road device, with a qHD (960 x 540) display, 5-megapixel camera and 4GB of internal storage. It also supports A2DP Bluetooth and DLNA, and makes room for dual mics and a gyroscope. No word yet on how much it'll cost or even what markets it'll hit, though we do know it will go on sale sometime in Q2. Until then, something tells us we might get our first look much sooner, sometime in Barcelona next week.
